Jeep CJ Engines by Year

Willys built the first civilian Jeep, the CJ-2A, in 1945. The CJ line ran through the CJ-3A, CJ-3B, CJ-5, CJ-6, CJ-7 and the CJ-8 Scrambler under Willys, Kaiser and American Motors until the Wrangler replaced it for 1987. The trims column shows which CJ models had each engine.

Willys (1945–1952)

The CJ-2A and CJ-3A used the 134 cubic-inch Go-Devil four, a flathead.

Willys and Kaiser (1953–1971)

The taller F-head Hurricane four arrived with the CJ-3B for 1953 and powered the CJ-5 and long-wheelbase CJ-6 from 1955. Kaiser added a Perkins diesel in the early 1960s and Buick's 225 Dauntless V6 from 1965.

American Motors (1972–1986)

AMC fitted its own 232 and 258 sixes and 304 V8, lengthening the CJ-5 to fit them. The CJ-7 arrived for 1976 and the CJ-8 Scrambler for 1981. GM's 151 Iron Duke four was the base engine for 1980–1983, and AMC's 2.5 four replaced it for 1984. Ratings are SAE net from 1972.
