Jeep Wrangler Engines by Year

The Wrangler replaced the CJ for 1987 and has been built in four generations: the YJ, TJ, JK and JL. There was no 1996 model year; the YJ ended with 1995 and the TJ arrived as a 1997 model.

YJ (1987–1995)

The YJ used AMC's 2.5 four and, through 1990, the carbureted 4.2 six. The fuel-injected 4.0 six replaced the 4.2 for 1991.

TJ (1997–2006)

The coil-sprung TJ kept the 2.5 four and the 4.0 six; the 2.4 PowerTech four replaced the 2.5 for 2003. The Rubicon arrived in 2003 and the long-wheelbase Unlimited in 2004.

The JK started with the 3.8 V6 and switched to the 3.6 Pentastar V6 for 2012. The JK was sold alongside the new JL during 2018.

The JL offers the 3.6 Pentastar and a 2.0 turbo four, with the 3.0 EcoDiesel from 2020 to 2023, the 4xe plug-in hybrid from 2021 to 2025, and the 6.4 V8 of the 392 models from 2021.
