BMW M52B28 specs: 2.8L (170 ci) 6-cylinder, 84 x 84 mm (3.3071 x 3.3071 in) bore and stroke, 10.2:1 compression. Rated 189-193 hp, 1996–2000.
The BMW M52B28 is exactly square — 3.3071" bore and 3.3071" stroke are the same — which splits the difference between a high-revving layout and a torque layout. The 3.3071" stroke does not reach 4,000 ft/min of mean piston speed until about 7,250 RPM, so piston speed is not what limits this engine's revs — valvetrain and breathing are. Each of the 6 cylinders displaces 28.3 ci (464 cc).
10.2:1 is in the range that usually runs on pump premium.
It is one of 3 engines in the BMW 170ci family, all of them 170 ci — the differences between them are in compression, heads and rating, not displacement. 9 factory variants share these dimensions, rated from 189 to 193 hp across 1996–2000.
