The El Camino was Chevrolet's car-based pickup: a full-size model in 1959–1960, then built on the Chevelle and later the Malibu platform from 1964 to 1987. It shared those cars' engines, including the SS 396 and 454.

The first El Camino was based on the full-size Chevrolet, with the 235 six, the 283 and the 348 W-series V8.
