Ford Mustang Engines by Year

Ford has built the Mustang without a break since April 1964. Over seven generations it has carried inline sixes and fours, a turbocharged 2.3, V6s, and V8s from the 260 to the supercharged 5.2 Predator.

Pick a year to see every engine offered that model year, with its code, rated horsepower and the trims it came in. Each engine links to its full specs.

First generation (1964–1973)

The Mustang launched in April 1964 with a 170 six and a 260 V8, and by 1968 it offered a 428. By 1969–1971 the list ran to the Boss 302, the Boss 429 and the 428 and 429 Cobra Jets.

Ford changed engines in the middle of model years several times, most notably the 260-to-289 switch in 1964 and the 428 Cobra Jet's arrival on April 1, 1968. The notes mark each one.
